Argentine Freemasonry and the May Revolution of 1810

Argentine Freemasonry pays homage to the protagonists of the historic May Revolution of 1810, which was driven by many of our beloved Brothers at the time and gave rise to the first Patriotic Government, marking the beginning of the independence process that would culminate in July 1816.

Our Order played a decisive role in the events that led to May 25th, as evidenced by the composition of the First Governing Board, which consisted of nine patriots, of whom only one, Miguel de Azcuénaga, was not a Mason.

The work and struggle of our beloved Brothers at the time had been underway for a long time. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Masonic lodges were established in the city of Buenos Aires, such as the legendary "Independence" Lodge, which was founded in 1795 with a Constitutive Charter from the Grand Lodge General of Scotland of France, a historical antecedent of the Grand Orient of France. There, notable figures such as Manuel Belgrano and Juan José Castelli were initiate.

Around 1804, the "St. John of Jerusalem for this part of America" Lodge emerged, with a Constitutive Charter from the Grand Lodge of Maryland in the United States, which promoted the independence of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata from any foreign domination.

After the English invasions, the Independence Lodge, presided over by Julián Álvarez, played a decisive role in the May events that put an end to our dependence on the Spanish crow.

In 1812, with the arrival of our Great Initiate, José de San Martín, in Buenos Aires, the Lautaro Lodge was created, which included Carlos María de Alvear and Matías Zapiola, among others, and worked towards declaring independence, a goal that would be achieved four years later, in July 1816.

Argentine Freemasonry pays homage on this date to these illustrious figures of Independence who, beyond advances and setbacks, beyond agreements and disagreements, forged our concept of Homeland and bequeathed to us the ideals of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity that we defend to this day.

The Men of May showed us the way, but the work begun has not yet been completed, because the objectives have not yet been fully achieved.

Today, we have the obligation to move forward to achieve the definitive realization of the political and social ideals proposed by Freemasonry, such as the defense of popular sovereignty, self-determination of peoples, legal equality, division of powers, representation, and freedom of thought, expression, and conscience.
